DOLO-650 mg Scam by Pharmaceutical Companies Worth Rs. 1000 Crore.

• On Friday, the pharmaceutical company Micro Labs Limited addressed the claims as “baseless” and “incorrect” that it had given doctors freebies of Rs 1000 crore to promote its Dolo 650 tablets. The Dolo 650 freebie case is being heard by Justice DY Chandrachud, who said that it is a very sensitive issue. 

• DOLO-650 mg turns out to be a major pharma fraud. The doctors received free DOLO-650mg worth Rs. 1000 crores to prescribe to the patients. On Thursday, an NGO argued before the Supreme Court that pharmaceutical businesses should be held accountable for rewarding doctors for recommending their products.

• Senior attorney Sanjay Parikh argued before the Supreme Court on behalf of an NGO called the Federation of Medical Sales Representatives Association of India that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made the claim regarding the manufacturers of the Dolo-650. Parikh also informed the court that the government’s pricing control mechanism regulates the market for any tablet up to 500 mg. The cost of a medicine exceeding 500 mg can be set by the manufacturer or pharma business. He claimed that Dolo-650 manufacturers sent freebies to doctors in order to assure a higher profit margin.

• The bench of the Apex Court referred to it as “a major problem” and requested that the center’s additional solicitor general, KM Natraj, provide a response within 10 days. The Supreme Court was hearing a PIL that asked for instructions to make pharmaceutical firms accountable for providing doctors with freebies as an incentive to recommend their drugs.
